Richard is a Partner in our Mental Health Law Department. A well known and well regarded authority on the subject of mental health law he has acted in many high profile cases.  

Richard took the case of R v Antoine to the House of Lords, the leading authority on legal issues arising from questions of insanity and diminished responsibility. Some of his other cases are detailed on the mental health page.

He has taught mental health law at all levels, including Masters Degree, mental health and criminal solicitors, MIND and the Legal Services Commission. He also regularly broadcasts and writes on legal developments in the field. He has given expert evidence both to the Courts and to Parliament regarding legal and legal aid developments in the field

Richard is a Committee Member of the Legal Aid Practitioners Group and has been Chair of the Mental Health Lawyers Association since 2001.  He has been a member of the Law Society’s Mental Health and Disability Committee since 2004. He has been a member of the Law Society Mental Health Review Tribunal Panel since 1996.

Richard is listed within the “Best of the UK/Band 1” within the Mental Health and Social Care Group in Chambers UK Directory 2008, where he is described as “an exceptionally good lawyer.” He was named Mental Health Lawyer of the Year in 2004.
