Richard Charlton

Consultant

Richard Charlton, previously a Partner, is now a Consultant Solicitor at Kaim Todner, where he was the founder of the Mental Health Department. He has conducted around twenty reported cases in this area of law. His current practice includes all aspects of mental health law, including capacity cases, together with criminal and prison law cases, especially where mental health is an issue.

He has been a member of the Law Society's Mental Health Tribunal Panel since 1996 and was selected as the first Mental Health Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year in 2004. He has conducted training from university to practitioner level as well has with other bodies such as MIND, Hospital Trusts and the Legal Services Commission.

Richard also broadcasts and writes regularly in this area of law and has been involved in consultations on all new mental health legislation in the last ten years.

He has served on the Law Society's Mental Health and Disability Committee and been a Director of the Legal Aid Practitioners Group. He has been Chair of the Mental Health Lawyers Association since 2001.

He is a senior Peer Reviewer for the Legal Services Commission in mental health law and is currently editing a new good practice guide for mental health lawyers.

He has been graded as Category 1 in Social /Health Care Law by Chambers Law Guide since 2005, and descriptions of his work there have included "an exceptionally good lawyer."

He has been accepted as an expert on the operation of mental health law both by Parliamentary Committee and by the High Court.
